893 Numbers and the Do Not Call Registry

Original posting: 10/13/03

After delays caused by challenges in the courts, The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has begun preparations to enforce the national Do Not Call registry – the list of more than 50 million U.S. residential telephone numbers declared "off-limits" to telemarketers.

Everyone is eligible to register their residential phone numbers. However, the national Do Not Call registry is only for personal phone numbers. Business-to-business calls are not covered by the registry, and all campus telephone numbers that begin with the area code and prefix 805-893- are considered business telephone numbers.

While the National Do Not Call registry will allow you to enter a UCSB business telephone number into their database, the FTC will remove these numbers on some future date.

If you have other questions about the registry, please visit www.donotcall.gov.
