Communications Services provides installation, maintenance and repair of all interbuilding cable on campus. We also maintain all connections from the campus to local and long-distance carriers as well as to the fiber interface to the Internet.
To recover the costs of maintaining this infrastructure, we charge a fee for the
dedicated use of each pair of wires. One pair of wires connects one telephone
line. Users of campus numbers (prefix 893) are charged for the cable pair as part of the line rate. Users who need connectivity without UCSB dial tone are charged only for the rental of the cable pairs dedicated to their use.
Non-University users are supplied with service by Verizon or other carriers, so cable pair charges from Communications Services are always billed separately. A single telephone line is billed for one cable pair, and an analog data circuit is billed for one or two cable pairs, depending on whether or not it is a two-wire or four-wire data circuit. A T1, fractional T1, or other high capacity digital data circuit will be billed for Digital Data Service.
