RE: Telephone Advisory Committee
Date: August 9, 1995
UCSB's telephone switching system is reaching the end of its useful life.
We have some short- and long-term decisions to make and we need help to make the
best decisions that we possibly can.
Please join ten to twelve of your faculty and staff colleagues, assembled
from throughout the campus, to provide advice on a replacement for our telephone
system. As you can read from the enclosure, that
provides greater details on our situation and the nature of our choices, your
participation will be required over several months and involve meetings perhaps
as often as once every two weeks.
Please seriously consider participating; we do need your help.
The advisory committee will be assisted by Vince Sefcik and others from
Communications Services. The advice produced by the group will be used for
campus consultation with a variety of senior administrators, departments, and
the Senate. The advisory committee will report to me and I am currently at work
to select a chair for the group.
The work that I am asking you to do is hard and the time it will take is
precious to you, but it has all the ingredients for a very rewarding effort:
uncertainty, requires wisdom in assessing the future; wide and critical impact,
the system will be used by virtually every person on campus as an essential
service; and, large economic consequence.
Please let me know of your willingness to serve by August 25, 1995. I can
be reached at extension 3132; Profs, DNS; or e-mail, [email protected].
Thank you.
